本作品のモチーフは亀倉雄策の1964年東京オリンピックのポスター。初のオリンピック開催を控え、日本という国が経済成長のスタートラインに立とうしていることをまさに象徴するかのようなこのイメージは、当時の人々に大きなビジュアルショックを与えた。またアート、デザイン史という視点でみても世界的に評価が高いこのデザインは、（私を含め）同時代をリアルタイムで体験していない人々の記憶にも様々なメディアを通して刻み込まれていると思う。オリンピックをテーマにしようと思いついたときに、真っ先にこのイメージが思い浮かんだ。 そんな誰もが見たことがあるイメージだが、近づいて見てみると様々なキャラクターが顔を覗かせる。背景のキャラクター達は全てオリンピックにまつわるイメージになっていて様々なオリンピックの競技、また歴代のメダリストやヒーロー達、また古代オリンピックにまつわる神話のキャラクターが散りばめてある。しかし、そんな輝かしいオリンピックのイメージとは対照的な、負の歴史やネガティブなイメージも描き込んでいる。ナショナリズムやコマーシャリズム、フェミニズムや民族などの人権問題、環境問題、ドーピングなどオリンピックが抱える様々な影の部分を同じ画面に共存させることで、オリンピックの矛盾や存在意義を提示したかった。そして来年行われる2020年東京オリンピックについても、賛成反対という二元論ではなく、もっとニュートラルな視点を持ち、少し見方や視点を変えるだけで違ったものが見えたり、新しい捉え方ができるようになったりするのではないだろうか。
